Indira Luciano Montalvo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras and is one of the coordinators for the UPR’s Institute for Cannabis Research. She has a Ph.D. in Economics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Dr. Luciano Montalvo’s research specializes in Input-Output and Economic Impact, Regional and Urban Economics, and Quantitative Methods. Throughout her career, Dr. Luciano Montalvo has worked as a private sector consultant, a professor, researcher, and analyst in radio and television. Between 2004 and 2005 she worked as an economic development advisor to the Governor of Puerto Rico. In 2009, she received the second-place award in the 1st annual Emilio Fontela Research Prize from the Hispanic-American Input-Output Society.
As a researcher, Dr. Luciano Montalvo has participated in projects related to the economic implications of Puerto Rico’s territorial status, the social welfare results of the Cantera Peninsula Project, and the economic effects of medical marijuana and industrial hemp. Previously, she has served as Director of the Economic Research Unit, Interim Chair of the Department of Economics, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras.
